Freedom 101: Aggression vs. Defense

The difference between Aggression and Defense is the difference between Slavery and Freedom, so telling the two apart should be of the utmost importance to Real Libertarians. Our natural tendency is to think that Aggression is whatever the other guys do and Defense is whatever we do, but that’s obviously a subjective standard. Reality is objective, not subjective. Fortunately, we human beings are generally capable of a reasonable level of objectivity when we want it badly enough, even if we have to train ourselves up a bit to get there. Can you tell the difference between Aggression and Defense? Take the quiz:

 1. George crashes his truck into a crowded cafeteria, gets out, and begins shooting people. Aggression or Defense?

2. Suzanna, a patron, retrieves a gun from her car, warns George to stop. He doesn’t, she shoots him. Aggression or Defense?

3. Suzanna can’t get to her gun. However, the police do show up eventually. They warn George to stop. He doesn’t, they shoot him. Aggression or Defense?

4. The police warn George to stop. He does and is taken into custody. Officers determine he’s guilty beyond a reasonable doubt and shoot him. Aggression or Defense?

 5. George is taken into custody and receives a fair trial. Jurors determine he’s guilty beyond a reasonable doubt and he’s given a lethal injection. Aggression or Defense?

The answers to these questions are: Aggression, Defense, Defense, Aggression, Aggression. To see why, compare each question with the others and ask yourself in what respect they are the same or different, and why that particular difference makes all the difference
